Active Money Exhibit

What will money mean in the years ahead?
At a time when cashless payments, pension concerns, and the consumption tax hike scheduled for October 2019 were stirring public anxiety around money, we organized a group exhibition on that theme featuring 17 art directors from a range of backgrounds, including graphic design, media art, and product design.

In this exhibition, each art director identified a personal issue or "weakness" in the way they think about money and presented an unpublished work created as its response. To let visitors evaluate the value of ideas about money using money itself, we handed out real 1-yen coins as voting tokens. We also distributed flyers sized exactly like actual 10,000-yen bills so they would fit neatly into a wallet.

Through press releases, the website, and direct mail, the exhibition was featured by 11 media outlets and welcomed 486 visitors over six days.

The exhibition was created by the creative team Yowami wo Nigiru Sushiya.
